Vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg flavour this Irish moss-style milk drink. This version starts with ready-made sea moss gel, so you can mix a glass without preparing dried moss first.
Makes: about 1 large glass. Equipment: a blender, measuring utensils and a clean glass.
Ingredients
- 250 ml chilled almond milk, coconut drink or another milk suitable for your diet
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract suitable for food use
- A pinch of ground cinnamon
- A pinch of ground nutmeg
- Maple syrup, agave syrup or honey to taste, optional
- A few ice cubes for serving, optional
- Ready-made sea moss gel — use the amount directed on your current jar for the person drinking it
Method
- Measure the base. Use clean utensils and a clean blender jug. Measure your chosen chilled milk or plant-based drink into the jug.
- Add vanilla and spices. Add the vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Start with a little of your optional sweetener; you can adjust the flavour after blending.
- Measure the gel. Add gel according to your current jar’s serving directions, including any daily limit, then return the jar to the fridge.
- Blend and adjust. Blend following your appliance’s instructions until combined. Add a little extra milk if you prefer a thinner drink; adjust the spices or sweetener to taste.
- Serve immediately. Pour into a glass, over ice if you like, and drink immediately. Do not add extra gel simply to make the drink thicker.
Choosing the milk
Almond milk, coconut drinks and dairy milk give different flavours and textures. A carton of coconut drink and a tin of coconut milk are different products; the latter will give a richer result. Check the ingredients and any allergy warnings on the one you choose.
How much gel goes into the drink?
Use the instructions on your current jar. Adjust the milk for consistency rather than increasing the gel beyond its directions.
Can you start with dried moss?
This recipe is written for ready-made gel. Dried sea moss needs its own complete preparation before use; do not add unprepared dried moss to the blender. Follow its pack directions and our gel-making guide.
Choosing and using your gel
Use ready-made gel that is within its date and has been stored as directed. Golden Gel contains golden sea moss, spring water and lime; other blends have different ingredients. Check your current jar and our Ingredients & Suitability guidance before choosing.
Follow the serving instructions for your own gel, including any daily limit and other gel you have already used that day. Powder, dried moss, capsules and gummies are not direct substitutes for the gel amount in these instructions. Our format guide explains the differences. If a direction is unclear, ask us before using it.
Make it when you are ready to drink it
Serve this drink immediately. Keep the gel jar refrigerated between uses and follow its own date and storage directions. Mixing gel into a drink does not restart its shelf life, and the jar date does not establish a storage period for the finished drink. See our Storage & Freshness guidance for jar care. Do not use a suspect jar or taste it to check freshness.
Before using sea moss
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, choosing for a child, taking medication or managing a health condition, ask a qualified healthcare professional before use. Sea moss contains naturally occurring iodine; if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication, speak to your doctor before use.
