How to make sea moss tea with ginger and lemon

A warm ginger and lemon infusion with optional cinnamon and sea moss gel measured using your jar’s directions.

Jump to recipe
Warm ginger and lemon sea moss drink in a glass cup beside ginger and lemon.

This sea moss tea uses a ginger and lemon infusion as its base, with ready-made gel stirred in before drinking. There are no tea leaves in the basic recipe, and no blender is needed.

Makes: about 1 mug. Equipment: a heatproof mug, teaspoon and a small strainer if using grated ginger.

Ingredients

  • 240 ml drinking water, freshly boiled
  • 1 slice fresh ginger, or ½ teaspoon peeled, freshly grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup, optional
  • 1 small cinnamon stick or a pinch of ground cinnamon, optional
  • Ready-made sea moss gel — use the amount directed on your current jar for the person drinking it

Method

  1. Make the infusion. Use a clean heatproof mug and utensils. Add the ginger and optional cinnamon to the mug, then carefully pour over the freshly boiled water.
  2. Steep to taste. Leave the ginger and cinnamon to infuse for about 5–10 minutes, depending on how strong you like them. Remove the cinnamon stick and ginger slice, or strain out grated ginger.
  3. Let it cool. Leave the infusion to cool to a comfortable drinking temperature. This recipe serves the drink warm; it does not require boiling the gel.
  4. Stir in the gel. Stir in gel using the current jar’s serving directions, including any daily limit. Mix thoroughly and return the jar to the fridge.
  5. Finish and serve. Add the lemon juice and optional sweetener, stir again and drink immediately while comfortably warm.

Can you add gel to hot tea?

For this recipe, brew the ginger first and add the gel once the drink has cooled to a comfortable drinking temperature. Stir thoroughly and follow any usage instructions on your gel’s jar.

Adjust the ginger and lemon

Use a ginger slice for an infusion you can easily strain. Grated ginger will leave more pieces unless strained. Ground cinnamon can settle, so stir again before drinking. Adjust the lemon to your taste.

Is it vegan?

Use maple syrup rather than honey if needed, and check the exact gel’s dietary information. Different gel blends contain different ingredients.

Is this the same as our loose-leaf tea?

No. This is a kitchen recipe using ready-made gel. Millie’s Moss loose-leaf herbal blends are separate products with their own ingredients, preparation directions and suitability information.

Choosing and using your gel

Use ready-made gel that is within its date and has been stored as directed. Golden Gel contains golden sea moss, spring water and lime; other blends have different ingredients. Check your current jar and our Ingredients & Suitability guidance before choosing.

Follow the serving instructions for your own gel, including any daily limit and other gel you have already used that day. Powder, dried moss, capsules and gummies are not direct substitutes for the gel amount in these instructions. Our format guide explains the differences. If a direction is unclear, ask us before using it.

Make it when you are ready to drink it

Serve this drink immediately. Keep the gel jar refrigerated between uses and follow its own date and storage directions. Mixing gel into a drink does not restart its shelf life, and the jar date does not establish a storage period for the finished drink. See our Storage & Freshness guidance for jar care. Do not use a suspect jar or taste it to check freshness.

Before using sea moss

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, choosing for a child, taking medication or managing a health condition, ask a qualified healthcare professional before use. Sea moss contains naturally occurring iodine; if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication, speak to your doctor before use.
