Creamy pumpkin spice sea moss smoothie with cinnamon, banana and pumpkin.

If autumn had a smoothie, this would be it.

This pumpkin spice sea moss smoothie is creamy, gently spiced and easy to make. Pumpkin, banana and warming spices combine with sea moss gel for a cosy seasonal drink that feels special without being overly sweet. No queueing for a limited-edition coffee required.

Why this smoothie works

Pumpkin has a naturally smooth texture, which makes it a lovely base for a blended drink. Banana adds sweetness and body, and the combination of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg brings that familiar pumpkin-spice warmth. The sea moss gel blends in quietly — no ocean-like flavour, just a smooth, well-rounded finish.

A good option if you want a seasonal way to use your sea moss gel and actually enjoy the taste.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup pumpkin purée, plain, not pumpkin pie filling
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 tablespoon sea moss gel
  • 1 cup oat milk, almond milk or your preferred plant-based milk
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • A small pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup, optional
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
  • A few ice cubes, optional

Method

  1. Add the pumpkin purée, banana, sea moss gel and milk to a blender.
  2. Add the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and vanilla, if using.
  3. Add maple syrup if you'd like it a little sweeter.
  4. Add ice cubes for a colder, thicker texture.
  5. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  6. Taste and adjust the spice, sweetness or milk to your liking.
  7. Pour into a glass and enjoy straight away.

Recipe notes

  • Use plain pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling — the pie filling is pre-sweetened and spiced, which will throw off the balance.
  • A ripe banana gives the best natural sweetness. The riper, the better.
  • Oat milk works particularly well here and lends a naturally creamy, autumnal flavour.
  • If you prefer a thinner consistency, add a splash more milk and blend again.
  • Go easy with the nutmeg — a small pinch is plenty. It can turn overpowering quickly.

How much sea moss gel to use

This recipe uses 1 tablespoon of sea moss gel per serving. A commonly suggested daily amount is 1–2 tablespoons, but it's best to follow the guidance on your product label, as this can vary.

More is not always better. Sea moss contains minerals including iodine, so use it in sensible amounts as part of a balanced diet.

Can you make this smoothie vegan?

Yes, easily. Use a plant-based milk and sweeten with maple syrup if needed. Plain sea moss gel is typically plant-based, but check the label on flavoured versions — some contain honey or other added ingredients.

Can you make it without a banana?

You can, though the smoothie will be less sweet and slightly less creamy. If you skip the banana, try a few soaked dates, extra pumpkin purée, or a spoonful of yoghurt for added body.

Can you serve it warm?

This is designed as a cold smoothie, but if you prefer something warmer, gently warm the milk before blending and skip the ice. Avoid adding sea moss gel to boiling liquid. Warm works fine, but very high heat can affect the texture.

Simple variations

Make it creamier

Swap to oat milk or coconut milk, or stir in a spoonful of yoghurt.

Make it sweeter

Add maple syrup, a soaked Medjool date or a little extra banana.

Add more depth

A tiny pinch of clove or allspice works well, but add carefully. Pumpkin spice can go from cosy to candle shop very quickly.

Turn it into a smoothie bowl

Use less milk so the blend is thicker, then top with sliced banana, granola, pumpkin seeds or a dusting of cinnamon.

A note on sea moss

Sea moss is a natural ingredient; like anything, it suits some people better than others. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, managing a thyroid condition, taking medication or supplementing with iodine, it's worth speaking to a healthcare professional before adding sea moss to your regular routine.
