Sea moss vs shilajit: differences and product checks
By Leanne & Tashan · Published

Sea moss and shilajit are different ingredients. Sea moss is a seaweed ingredient; shilajit is a resin-like material found in mountainous rock layers and used in supplements. A shared place in wellness discussions does not make their servings, uses or effects equivalent.
For sea moss, our Help pages explain Millie’s Moss formats and directions. For a shilajit product, check that seller’s exact ingredients, instructions and testing information.
How do the products differ?
| Check | Millie’s Moss sea moss products | A shilajit product |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients | Golden Gel contains golden sea moss, spring water and lime. Other blends differ. | A different ingredient; check the complete formulation and any additions. |
| Preparation | Ready-made gel is ready to spoon or mix into food. Dried moss needs preparation; other formats have their own directions. | Use the directions for the exact product and form. Sea moss instructions do not apply. |
| Storage | Fresh gel needs refrigeration. Use the pack guidance for other formats. | Check the product’s own storage instructions. |
| Serving | Follow the current label for your blend and format. | Follow its own label; do not convert a spoonful of gel into a shilajit amount. |
See our sea moss format guide for the practical differences within our range.
What is shilajit, and why check testing?
A 2025 laboratory study in BMC Chemistry describes shilajit’s occurrence in mountainous rock layers and measured thallium in raw samples and shilajit-containing supplements. Researchers examined 13 raw samples and five supplements; the highest concentration in a supplement exceeded the highest in a raw sample.
Those findings concern the samples tested. They do not establish the safety of every shilajit product or show that sea moss is safer. They are a reason to ask for specific product evidence rather than treating the word “natural” as a quality assurance.
For either product, ask which sample or batch a report covers, what was tested and what the results mean. A testing claim alone does not confirm personal suitability or a health benefit.
Which is better?
There is no basis in our product guidance for ranking the two by health results, energy or “strength”. Compare the exact ingredients and intended use, rather than choosing by a mineral count or a promised transformation.
Can you take them together?
Our Help guidance does not provide a combined-use method or establish a suitable dose for pairing sea moss with shilajit. Ask a qualified healthcare professional before combining them, showing the labels of both products and anything else you take.
Our Ingredients & Suitability guidance advises checking before sea moss use if you have a health condition, take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are choosing for a child. Sea moss contains naturally occurring iodine; speak to your doctor before use if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication.
