Uses
-
Tea. Typically made by boiling the leaves and stems which is known as cerasee in Jamaica. To be consumed in moderation, with recommendations suggesting 1-2 cups daily for short periods or limiting consumption to a few times a month, taking breaks in between, as excessive use can cause side effects like low blood sugar, diarrhea, or liver issues; always consult a doctor first, especially if pregnant, diabetic, or on medication.
-
Cooking. Besides the stem and leaves, the bitter melon plant bears wart-covered, bitter-tasting fruits that can be enjoyed cooked or raw. They’re a popular ingredient in Asian dishes.
